Psychophysical determination of the spatial connectivity function in a model of contour salience
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recently, we proposed a cortical-based model that accounts for a range of psychophysical results on contour salience [S.C. Yen, L.H. Finkel, Vision Res. 38 (1998) 719}741]. In this model, cortical units are interconnected by long-range horizontal connections where the connection strength between units is de"ned by an inter-element spatial connectivity function. In the present work, we determine the spatial connectivity function psychophysically and compare the result to the function implemented in the original computational model. The results suggest the original product of gaussian spatial weighting function does not completely describe the psychophysical data. Rather, we "nd that the connectivity function is `tapereda suggesting a lack of separability between position and orientation in cortical connectivity. ( 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Assessment and Spatial Planning of Landscape Ecological Connectivity for Biodiversity Management (Case Study: Qazvin Province)
Habitat and ecosystem fragmentation and, consequently, the loss of landscape connectivity are major causes of biodiversity destruction, leading to disruption of material, energy, and information flow at the landscape scale. Given the importance of this issue, the current study aimed to evaluate the ecological connectivity and spatial planning of Qazvin Province, in order to re-establish and pro...
متن کاملCortical Synchronization Mechanism for “Pop-Out” of Salient Image Contours
We present a model based on long-range intra-cortical connections which computes the salience of contours in a visual scene. The model accounts for a number of psychophysical and physiological results on contour salience, and provides a mechanism for several of the Gestalt laws of perceptual organization. In the model, cells lying on smooth contours facilitate each other, and strongly facilitat...
متن کاملExtraction of perceptually salient contours by striate cortical networks
We present a cortical-based model for computing the perceptual salience of contours embedded in noisy images. It has been suggested that horizontal intra-cortical connections in primary visual cortex may modulate contrast detection thresholds and pre-attentive "pop-out". In our model, horizontal connections mediate context-dependent facilitatory and inhibitory interactions among oriented cells....
متن کاملIntrathoracic Airway Tree Segmentation from CT Images Using a Fuzzy Connectivity Method
Introduction: Virtual bronchoscopy is a reliable and efficient diagnostic method for primary symptoms of lung cancer. The segmentation of airways from CT images is a critical step for numerous virtual bronchoscopy applications. Materials and Methods: To overcome the limitations of the fuzzy connectedness method, the proposed technique, called fuzzy connectivity - fuzzy C-mean (FC-FCM), utilized...

We present a cortical-based model for computing the perceptual salience of contours embedded in noisy images. It has been suggested (Gilbert, 1992; Field, Hayes & Hess, 1993) that horizontal intra-cortical connections in primary visual cortex may modulate contrast detection thresholds and pre-attentive “popout”. In our model, horizontal connections mediate context-dependent facilitatory and inh...
